Unison UniSynth Review: Is AI Making Music Production Too Easy?

Artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of music production, and it’s changing the way producers create music.

From generating melodies to helping with mixing and mastering, AI-powered tools are popping up everywhere. But are they genuinely improving our workflow, or are we becoming too reliant on technology?

In this video, I’m taking a look at Unison UniSynth, an AI-powered synthesiser designed to make sound design quicker and more accessible.

The question is simple: can AI help us become more creative, or is it making music production a little too easy?

What Is Unison UniSynth?

UniSynth is an AI-powered sound design plugin developed by Unison Audio.

Unlike traditional synthesisers, where you might spend ages scrolling through presets or adjusting parameters to create a particular sound, UniSynth aims to simplify the process.

You select the type of sound you’re looking for, choose a musical genre and let the plugin generate something for you.

Whether you’re producing Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop or electronic music, the idea is to help you find inspiration without getting bogged down in the technical side of sound design.

How Does UniSynth Work?

One of the main selling points of UniSynth is its simplicity.

Rather than starting with a blank synthesiser and building a sound from scratch, you can generate sounds based on your chosen genre and instrument type.

These include:

  • Bass sounds and 808s
  • Synth leads
  • Pads and atmospheric textures
  • Plucks
  • Chord sounds

UniSynth also includes an advanced mode, allowing producers to customise generated sounds rather than simply accepting the initial result.

This is an important distinction because it means you’re not necessarily giving up all creative control.

Can AI Speed Up Your Music Production Workflow?

As producers, we’ve all experienced those moments where we’re trying to find the perfect sound.

You might have a melody in your head, but finding a synth patch that matches what you’re hearing can take longer than expected.

Before you know it, you’ve spent half an hour browsing presets instead of actually making music.

This is where something like UniSynth could be useful.

Being able to generate sounds quickly could help you stay in that creative zone, particularly when you’re sketching out ideas or building the foundations of a beat.

However, speed doesn’t automatically equal quality.

A sound still needs to complement the arrangement, work within the mix and contribute something meaningful to the track.

Is AI Taking Away From Creativity?

This is where things get interesting.

There’s an ongoing debate about AI in music production, and I can understand both sides.

On one hand, technology has always helped producers work more efficiently. We’ve gone from hardware samplers and traditional recording studios to powerful DAWs that allow us to create entire records from a bedroom.

AI could simply be another step in that evolution.

On the other hand, there’s something valuable about learning how sounds are created.

Understanding oscillators, filters, envelopes and modulation gives you the ability to shape sounds with intention.

If we rely entirely on AI to make those decisions, are we potentially missing out on developing those skills?

Personally, I think that’s an important question for producers to consider.

Who Is UniSynth For?

UniSynth could be particularly appealing to beginners who want to experiment with different sounds without needing an advanced understanding of synthesis.

It could also be useful for experienced producers looking to speed up their workflow or find inspiration when they’re struggling to come up with something fresh.

However, producers who enjoy building their own sounds from scratch may prefer a more hands-on approach.

Ultimately, it comes down to how you like to work and what you want from your production tools.

Final Thoughts: Is AI Making Music Production Too Easy?

There’s no denying that AI is changing music production.

Tools like Unison UniSynth are making certain aspects of the creative process more accessible, particularly when it comes to generating sounds and exploring new ideas.

But I think there’s an important difference between using technology to assist your creativity and allowing it to make every creative decision for you.

At the end of the day, having access to thousands of sounds doesn’t automatically make someone a great producer.

It’s what you do with those sounds that matters.
